More than twenty years ago, Schang Hutter left his hometown of Solothurn to work in Hamburg and later in Berlin. His delicate wooden figures, as well as large sculptures in public spaces in Hanover, Thun, and Montreux, are examples of his diverse work, which addresses people’s fears as well as historical references. Today, the sculptor lives in Genoa. This artist portrait explores the influences on his work and uses snapshots to highlight important stages and turning points in his artistic career and life between 1982 and 2007.

The Solothurn sculptor Schang Hutter lived in Genoa for a while. Over twenty years ago, he left his hometown of Solothurn to work in Hamburg and later in Berlin. His delicate wooden figures, as well as large sculptures in public spaces in Hanover, Thun and Montreux, are examples of his diverse work, which addresses people’s fears and historical references. For the artist, art and politics were closely linked. With his iron sculpture SHOA, which he provocatively placed in front of the main entrance to the Federal Parliament Building, he gained widespread recognition among a broad audience almost ten years ago as part of the ‘Grauholz Sculpture Exhibition’. The artist portrait explores the question of what influenced the artist in his work and shows important stages and turning points in his artistic career and life between 1982 and 2007 in snapshots. A plea for art, culture and society and the people who live in them.
